Twenty-one-year-old William Amos Cramer was ordered Monday to stand trial on charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault in the August 4 death of William Sherry at Cambria County Prison.
A deputy coroner says Cramer attempted to make it look like Sherry hanged himself. But he says the ruse was immediately clear because Sherry had been bound hand and foot with a torn bed sheet.
Prosecutors say Cramer admitted killing Sherry in a note to another inmate. Investigators allege Cramer, who is white, disliked Sherry because he thought he'd fathered a black child.
Defense attorneys say prison records indicate their cell had been checked on four minutes before Cramer contacted guards.
