MIDDLETOWN, Pa.—A school district in central Pennsylvania has canceled a pair of homecoming dances after officials discovered a loaded gun at a high school.

The Patriot-News reports ( http://bit.ly/QikqPD) that the Middletown Area School District sent an email to parents about the incident Friday afternoon.

According to the email, the gun was confiscated earlier in the day at Middletown Area High School. It says an unspecified number of students were taken into custody.

The district posted a message on its website canceling the dances slated to be held hours later at the middle- and high schools on Friday night. It said the events would be rescheduled.

The district says additional law enforcement will be present for homecoming activities scheduled for Saturday.
