PHILADELPHIA—Police in Philadelphia say they shot an armed man who fled a bullet-damaged car during a traffic stop.

Authorities say two officers pulled over a vehicle late Thursday night after noticing it had a shot-out back window and other bullet holes.

Chief Inspector Scott Small says a 40-year-old passenger jumped out with a gun in his hand while the driver sped off.

Small says officers chased the man on foot before he turned and pointed the weapon at them. Police fired several shots, critically wounding him.

Small says the man's loaded gun was recovered at the scene. The pockmarked car was later found unoccupied.
