HEILWOOD, Pa.—Police say a former church business manager stole more than $108,000 from a western Pennsylvania parish.

State police in Indiana, Pa. charged 37-year-old Daniel Yasick on Tuesday. His defense attorney says he's not had a chance to review the charges in detail.

But troopers say Yasick resigned in January when the pastor of Church of the Resurrection confronted him about financial irregularities, acknowledged taking about $23,000 from the church and promised to pay it back. Later that day, police say Yasick destroyed some church financial documents.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg then turned the matter over to police who determined more than four times that much money was missing and that Yasick apparently logged some checks as bill payments when they were really written for petty cash and cashed.

Yasick faces a preliminary hearing Oct. 23.
