NEW HOPE, Pa.—Police say an armed man in suburban Philadelphia was shot by borough police trying to take him into custody to be committed for mental health treatment.

Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler told The Philadelphia Inquirer ( http://bit.ly/R56ho0) that the 46-year-old man pointed a .357 Magnum at officers who arrived at his New Hope residence Saturday night to try to take him to a facility for a mental health evaluation.

Heckler said police fired several shots, and the man was being treated in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital on Sunday for a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Police chief Michael Cummings said county detectives are investigating. He said no officers were injured.
