Common Pleas Judge Willis Berry Jr. reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. He could have served through the end of the year, but decided to leave on Aug. 31.
That's the same day a Superior Court panel of judges said he has to pay $180,000 in punitive damages awarded by a jury related to a real estate transaction in which Berry had a legal client take ownership of a property, then sell it to Berry for $1,500.
The property was later valued at $180,000. The client testified that she didn't know the property had been deeded to her.
