The state Court of Judicial Discipline suspended Judge Robert Mulgrew with pay Friday. The court said it will separately hear arguments on whether to cut off Mulgrew's pay during the suspension.
A federal indictment issued Thursday charges Mulgrew and Lorraine Dispaldo, an aide to Democratic state Rep. William Keller, with mail fraud and other offenses for misusing more than $800,000 in grants from the Department of Community and Economic Development.
Prosecutors say both signed grant applications for two community organizations that funneled the money to friends and relatives.
Phones messages seeking comment left for Mulgrew at his office and for Dispaldo at Keller's Philadelphia district office weren't immediately returned.
Keller hasn't been charged with any crime.
