PITTSBURGH—A woman awaiting trial on charges she abducted a newborn from a Pittsburgh hospital last month has been committed to a state mental hospital for depression.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the judge committed 19-year-old Breona Moore to Torrance State Hospital over the objections of Allegheny County Deputy District Attorney Laura Ditka.

Ditka argued that Moore should remain in jail because the same psychiatrist who says Moore is depressed and suicidal also determined Moore is nonetheless mentally competent to stand trial.

But Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Manning committed Moore after determining she was a danger to herself and others and said Thursday he'll review her status in 30 days.

Pittsburgh police charge that Moore bought hospital scrubs and pretended to be a nurse so she could take the baby, who was found with her hours later unharmed.
