PHILADELPHIA—Authorities say a police officer was in stable condition after being hit by gunfire in north Philadelphia. A suspect was shot and critically injured.

Police said the SWAT officer and his partner had confronted three men in the Fairmount section of the city just before 10 p.m. Tuesday after a woman said someone pointed a gun at her.

Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross said one man pointed a gun at them. An officer fired, but his partner was hit in the lower part of his bulletproof vest by what officials believe was a ricochet.

The 19-year veteran was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition. The 21-year-old suspect was taken to Temple University Hospital in what Ross called "extremely critical" condition. Another man was arrested and two weapons were recovered.
