PITTSBURGH—A suburban Pittsburgh police officer told jurors he was preparing do die after he was shot five times responding to a home-invasion robbery that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Twenty-seven-year-old Emilio Rivera, of McKees Rocks, and 19-year-old Marcus Andrejco, of Rankin, are on trial in the shooting of Clairton police Officer James Kuzak.

Kuzak described to an Allegheny County jury Monday how he lie wounded and helpless, unarmed and unable to feel his legs after being shot last April after pulling up to the scene of a reported home invasion. Another officer carried him to safety.

Police initially charged two other men in the shooting but say Rivera and Andrejco confessed. Defense attorneys say statements they made to police were coerced.
