PHILADELPHIA—A major water main break in south Philadelphia has flooded several streets and forced some residents to evacuate.

Residents near 21st and Bainbridge streets began reporting water coming up through manholes at around 9 p.m. Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the Philadelphia Water Department says crews have shut down a 48-inch transmission main, which feeds water into smaller mains. No water or low water pressure is affecting residents on several streets.

The Red Cross says a few people have sought shelter in a nearby school.
