PITTSBURGH—Heavy thunderstorms are cooling off parts of western Pennsylvania on the heels of a record-setting high temperature in Pittsburgh.

The National Weather Service reports the mercury hit 97 degrees at Pittsburgh International Airport on Friday, one degree above the mark set in 1934.

Meteorologists warned of rain, hail and strong winds on Friday night in many counties in the western and central parts of the state.

WTAE-TV reports thousands of power outages in the Pittsburgh area.

Destructive storms traveled through the Harrisburg and Lancaster areas overnight Thursday and into Friday morning, downing trees and knocking out electricity.
