NORRISTOWN, Pa.—An off-duty state trooper has been charged in a fatal crash last month on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in suburban Philadelphia.

Forty-year-old Barry Searfoss Jr. of Coatesville is charged in Montgomery County with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, careless and reckless driving and other counts in the May 18 crash in Plymouth Meeting.

Authorities allege that he was intoxicated when his pickup truck ran into another vehicle that had slowed down due to mechanical problems, killing 21-year-old Robin Williams of Philadelphia.

Searfoss, who was arraigned on the charges Monday and released on $50,000 bail, declined comment outside the courtroom.

Defense attorney Christian Hoey called Williams' death "a tragedy of epic proportions" for her family and told reporters that this was "certainly not lost" on his client.
