TRENTON, N.J.—New Jersey Transit has approved a rapid-transit bus route to connect heavily traveled southern New Jersey roads with downtown Philadelphia.

The new system would let buses travel on highway shoulder lanes and the median for part of the trip, which would follow Routes 55 and 42 and I-676. The plan would also add 1,800 new parking spaces for commuters in Winslow and Deptford Townships.

The projected price is $46 million. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports ( http://bit.ly/MGKSBI) officials want the federal government to pay half of it.

The route, which would include train station-like shelters, could open around 2020.

The plan is in addition to a new light-rail line proposed to run between Glassboro and Camden.
