MEADVILLE, Pa.—A northwestern Pennsylvania county has approved spending $282,000 to upgrade security cameras at its prison nearly two years after a guard was fatally injured by an inmate.

The Meadville Tribune ( http://bit.ly/LjQYo6) reports Tuesday that the system approved by the Crawford County commissioners will replace cameras in 19 current locations and add 45 more.

Twenty-five-year-old Gregory Brown, of Meadville, is serving 2 1/2 to 5 years in prison after a jury convicted him of involuntary manslaughter.

A jury rejected a prosecutor's claim that Brown purposely slammed 49-year-old guard Gary Chapin onto his head on Oct. 13, 2010, and refused to convict Brown of third-degree murder which carried up to 40 years in prison. Chapin died from his injuries a month later.

Brown claimed he and the guard tripped while fighting and that he never intended to kill Chapin.
