PITTSBURGH—The transit agency serving Pittsburgh and its suburbs says it will eliminate 13 little-used stops on the light trail transit system to speed up travel times.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ( http://bit.ly/KaE2zd) says the Port Authority of Allegheny County announced the change Monday.

The authority said the stops selected for elimination were based on low boarding counts and proximity to adjacent stops.

Officials say the longest distance anyone will have to travel to reach an open stop will be about one-third of a mile.

The changes will go into effect June 25. Signs will be posted starting next Monday to tell riders about the changes.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald hailed the step and says he wants to see other changes to improve service and efficiency on the system.
