ERIE, Pa.—The facility known as Erie Shriners Hospital for Children has been renamed and repurposed to an outpatient clinic that will also offer same-day surgical services.

The Erie Times-News ( http://bit.ly/Koddr1) reports Tuesday that the change comes after a three-year financial and operational overhaul meant to save the facility, which had been one of six Shriners hospitals that the group's international delegates proposed closing in 2009.

The facility is now known as Erie Shriners Ambulatory Surgery Center and Outpatient Specialty Care Center and remains part of the Shriners network of children's hospitals.

Patients needing inpatient surgery are now referred to other hospitals.

The Erie center also offers physical therapy and clinic appointments and outpatient visits have increased from about 12,000 in 2009 to nearly 14,000 last year.
