STATE COLLEGE, Pa.—Penn State alumni could start voting Tuesday for three contested seats on the university's Board of Trustees in the first election since the board was criticized for its actions in the aftermath of child sexual abuse charges against retired assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

An unprecedented 86 candidates are running. A university spokeswoman says a ballot and links to candidate biographies and position statements are now available on an election voting website.

Voting will run through 9 a.m. on May 3, with results to be announced at the trustees meeting the following day.

Some former players and vocal alumni groups angered by the board's ouster of the late Joe Paterno as head coach in November are calling the election a vehicle for change.
