A local high school band competition will feature performances by 10 groups Saturday night at Spring Grove Area High School.

The school's music boosters organization will host its Marching Spectacular, an official band competition through the Cavalcade of Bands.

The competition at Spring Grove has grown in three years from four to 10 bands, said Lisa Smith, community relations coordinator for the school.

Eight of those bands will compete during the evening. Spring Grove's marching band is not eligible because it is the hosting school, but will receive scores for reference.

The other band not eligible for competition is the Hanover Lancers, a group formed from marching band members who have graduated from high school. Smith said the group will open the evening.

Smith said each band will have 15 minutes to perform for scores from official Cavalcade of Bands judges. The Cavalcade of Bands is an organization that includes competitive marching bands in several mid-Atlantic states.

Many of those performances will be similar to the schools' halftime shows for football games, but Smith said competitions like this are a chance for the bands to expand their routines.

"It's not just the music, and it's not just the marching," Smith said. "They are elaborate staging productions."

Three York County schools will participate in the competition. Susquehannock High School, York Suburban and Eastern York will compete for awards for field work, technicality and appearance, among others.

Other regional high schools represented will be New Oxford, Hempfield, Littlestown, Bermudian Springs and Donegal.

Smith said the concession stand will be open during the event, and door prizes will be awarded.

Smith said the music boosters have wanted to host the competitions for several years, and finally were able to organize it at Papermakers Stadium. Smith said she is happy to see the event growing so quickly.

"Bands are returning, and they're bringing other bands with them," she said.

Tickets are $8 at the gate, with discounts for students and attendees 65 and older. The event will start at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. The stadium is located on the Roth's Church Road Campus in Spring Grove.
