The Salvation Army's holiday goal is to make Christmas happy and warm for families in need.
The agency is preparing for its annual Christmas Cheer Distribution, which includes coat, toys and food giveaway programs, said George Lenkner, the Salvation Army's business manager.
Registration for the distribution is 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, through Friday, Nov. 1., at the Salvation Army Chapel at 124 S. Duke St. in York City.
The evening registration is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the chapel.
At the same time, registering families will receive vouchers to get a free coat on Wednesday, Nov. 13, or Thursday, Nov. 14.
The Salvation Army has about 1,500 coats to distribute, with the bulk of them coming from last year's Coats for Kids Telethon done by WGAL-TV8. The donated coats were cleaned by the Central Pennsylvania Dry Cleaners Association, Lenkner said.
Families who don't sign up for the Christmas Cheer Distribution can still get coats - for children and adults - during the coat distributions next month, he said.
Signing up for Christmas Cheer Distribution also means registering children ages 1 to 10 to receive toys collected through the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program, which begins Friday, Nov. 15.
For the program, the agency will get names, genders and gift desires from children. The information, without the names, is put on paper angels that represent the children.
Then shoppers can select the angels from Christmas trees set up at local stores and purchase gifts for the youngsters.
The toys will be given to families during the Christmas Cheer Distribution, when the agency also gives out food baskets that includes turkeys, Lenkner said.
The distribution is Wednesday, Dec. 18, and Thursday, Dec. 19.
The Salvation Army annually serves about 2,000 families during the holiday season, including those who come annually to get toys for their children, he said.
"And each year, we see new families," he added. "A lot of them are Yorkers who have experienced unexpected unemployment for a long period of time and never dreamed they would need additional resources to have a happy Christmas for their families."
