Southern Regional Police have filed charges against a New Freedom man for allegedly stealing a donation jar from a borough convenience store a month ago.

Police said Gary Lee Richmond stole the money-filled jar from Rutter's Farm Store at 2 S. Broad St. about 9:45 p.m. Jan. 23. The donation jar was for Support Our American Recruits (SOAR), police said.

SOAR sends care packages to local soldiers stationed abroad.

Police said Richmond went to the store to return two packs of cigarettes. While the clerk was distracted, he put the jar under his jacket and left the store, police said.

Richmond, 47, of 12 Independence Drive, will be charged with theft and receiving stolen property, police said; charges were filed on Friday and he will receive a summons through the mail.
