Both major parties are accepting resumes from York City-area residents who think they could be the next representative in the 95th House, a seat that'll be left vacant when Democrat Eugene DePasquale resigns in January to become state Auditor General.
Interested people must live in the heavily Democratic district, which covers York City, North York, West York, Spring Garden Township and part of West Manchester Township.
The Democratic Party of York County is accepting letters of interest, including a resume, at its party headquarters no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21. They may be mailed to the party, attention of chairman Bob Kefauver, P.O. Box 1862, York 17405.
Candidates who submitted letters will be invited to a public
The party can't legally make a recommendation for a replacement until DePasquale resigns, said chairman Bob Kefauver, but a nomination recommendation committee will convene after the resignation to vote on a candidate. That candidate will be recommended to the Pennsylvania Democratic Party's Executive Committee for approval to appear on the ballot and oppose a Republican in a special election, he said.
The recommendation committee meeting will be open to the public, but a date and location for the meeting won't be determined until after the state's Department of State announces the seat vacancy, he said. The date of the special election will be set after DePasquale's resignation.
DePasquale said he'll resign from the House in January to be sworn in as auditor general. He won both elections, but can't serve in both positions. His House seat will be empty from the time of his resignation until after a special election next year.
Bob Wilson heads the York County
Republican committee members in the 95th will vote for a candidate after DePasquale's resignation, and the winning candidate will then be placed on the ballot for the special election, he said. A state committee isn't involved.
Wilson said Republicans are also accepting letters of interest, addressed to York County Republican Committee, 2453 Kingston Court, Suite 101, York 17402 or via email at email@example.com.
"When the time comes, we will set a date for the committee in the 95th to gather and have a daylong period of interviews," Wilson said.
