A York-area couple was charged in Lancaster County after they allegedly stole and then sold leased restaurant equipment from an eatery they operated.
Kerri L. Khairat, 37, is charged with six counts of conspiracy to commit theft. She is free on $100,000 unsecured bail, according to online court documents.
Her husband, Mohamed Khairat, 43, is wanted on 10 counts of conspiracy to commit theft. He remains at large and is wanted by police.
The Khairats opened Moe's Bistro at 345 W. Main St. in Leola in February, but over the Memorial Day weekend, they abruptly closed the restaurant, according to East Lampeter Township Police.
Over that weekend, the Khairats allegedly stole $140,000 worth of commercial equipment they had leased to operate the restaurant and abandoned the business, police said.
The equipment was sold by the Khairats but has been located, police said.
Employees were not notified of the closing and were left in the lurch when they didn't receive their paychecks, police said.
In the lead-up the closing, promotional sales coupons for future price specials were sold to customers up to the day the restaurant closed, police said.
Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Mohamed Khairat is asked to contact detective Chris Jones at 291-4676.
