South Eastern, warily eyeing a state reimbursement deadline for school construction, will discuss possible elementary renovations projects on Thursday.

Superintendent Rona Kaufmann said the school board will have EI Associates present options on renovating all three elementary schools, which could range from individual renovations to constructing a centralized elementary school.

The district is facing a Sept. 30 deadline to submit any plans on school construction projects that would be eligible for partial state reimbursement. The state is imposing a moratorium after that point, so Kaufmann said there's extra motivation to examine the district's facilities right now.

Kaufmann added there's no guarantee South Eastern will build anything, but at least they'll be eligible for reimbursement.

South Eastern Middle School-West, which houses the fifth and sixth grades and has had recent air quality issues, isn't eligible for reimbursement because it's had a renovation in the past decade. Still, the district will consider renovation options, Kaufmann said, even if it would have to be paid entirely by South Eastern.

South Eastern Middle School-East just got a new roof, and the high school is in good shape, she added.

While South Eastern isn't facing issues with classroom capacity, the elementary schools would benefit from standard updates and getting energy efficient infrastructure, Kaufmann said. The current boilers are aging and always in need of maintenance.

The board meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the administration building for its committee meetings.
