York City's downtown rental market has gained 20 brand-new units one block west of Continental Square.

Home to York County's Veterans Affairs and Agency on Aging until a few years ago, the century-old building at 141-147 W. Market St. has been transformed into apartments featuring hardwood floors and original stained-glass windows.

Midor Properties and its partners purchased the property in November and began renovating the former county offices.

The building was in "very, very poor condition," said Dora Markle, leasing agent with Midor Property Management, a locally based company that got into the real-estate business in 2009.

"The whole place was just gutted and completely redone," she said.

The building has a new roof and new heating and plumbing systems. A few units are still under construction, but the majority are ready to rent, Markle said.

The space: Monthly rent ranges from $495 for a studio apartment to $1,050 for a two-bedroom unit. Two handicap-accessible units on the first floor rent for $795 and $925.

The first four tenants moved into the apartments, dubbed Codorus Flats, on Thursday.

Two retail spaces -- about 1,400 square feet and 1,200 square feet -- on the first floor are also available to rent.

"We've spent a lot of time and energy and money," said Mike Markle, Midor Properties developer and co-owner. "We're hoping that it brings a lot of people downtown."
