Join librarian Demi Stevens for a 12-month journey from concept to published page (or digital page) as she leads would-be authors through the process of writing a book.

Daytime and evening writers' groups will be forming during September at the Paul Smith Library of Southern York County in Shrewsbury. Together, the groups will explore all aspects of the writing and self-publishing process.

All community members are welcome, and no experience is necessary. The only requirement is a willingness to experiment and create something new.

Once participants are identified, members may choose to form smaller interest groups or develop a meeting schedule and locations that are mutually agreeable, or to share pages and information in person or online for group feedback.

Specific topics of interest will be discussed in large group meetings offered monthly at the library in Shrewsbury. These topics may include: overview of the process; getting started; character and plot development; narrative voice and viewpoint; tension, momentum and climax; selecting a title; copy editing and revisions; formatting for print or digital distribution; cover art; publishing an eBook for free with Amazon's Kindle; publishing a trade paperback for less than $250 with Amazon's CreateSpace; and marketing your title online and in the real world.

The culmination of the year-long project will be a series of Meet the Author visits and Book Signing events to be slated around the county during the fall of 2013, featuring all participating authors from the group.

An organizational meeting is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Paul Smith Library, 80 Constitution Ave. in Shrewsbury. It is not necessary to attend this meeting in order to participate in the year-long project. Prospective authors may join at any point throughout the process.
