With so much focus on obesity, smoking and cholesterol, sometimes good vision can become an overlooked -- no pun intended -- part of a healthy lifestyle.

A vision van at the free Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity Fair in York City will not only offer free eye exams, but free prescription eyeglasses to meet each individual's needs.

Anyone with more complicated prescription eyeglasses will have his or her order sent to a vision lab and have the eyeglasses mailed to them in a few weeks, said Dr. Deborah McMillan, event director.

Visual exams are one of the many free health services and activities that will be available at the free Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity Fair on Monday at 825 E. Princess St. in downtown York.

"It is a celebration of good health," McMillan said.

Hosted by the Emmanuel Community Development Corp. and the East Side Health Center advisory board, the free health fair runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Other services: On-site dental care will be offered to children 12 months through 18 years of age, but they must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Children who have been to the dentist in the past six months will not be served. The dental care will be provided by Big Smiles of Pennsylvania, a dental group based in West Conshohocken.

Community groups will also provide entertainment with dances, music and drumlines.

The event will also feature the Families in Motion walk from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., weather permitting.

Food, prizes, blood pressure checks, cholesterol and body mass index screenings and cancer screenings will be part of the fair as well as educational presentations on CPR, sickle cell anemia, domestic violence, organ donation and other health-related topics.

Volunteers are still needed for the health fair. Anyone interested in volunteering or signing up for an appointment ahead of time for vision or dental care should call 854-1047.
