Heather Klinefelter has many reasons to look forward to the first-ever York City Boutique Week.

The owner of Growing Up Green at 266 W. Market St. said it will give her a chance to show visitors locally made children's items they may not know are available downtown.

"It will also give me a chance to show off my cuter customers," she said.

Central Market is usually full of food. But one day during Boutique Week it will also be full of babies, as the event includes a fashion show.

Babies will be wearing Growing Up Green's colorful cloth diapers, tutus and headbands as they're ushered through what is normally the seating area in Central Market.

Adults will also be showcasing the store's baby carriers, walking through while wearing their children close to their hearts.

Early September: Plans for Boutique Week, which is slated for Sept. 4 through 7, are still a little embryonic, but organizers said tickets for the fashion show will be $5.

That admission will include a $5 coupon guests can use at shops participating in Boutique Week.

"It gives people a chance to support their neighbors," Klinefelter said.

Growing Up Green will also be offering incentives.

Guests who attend the store's baby wearing and cloth diaper seminar will receive 5 percent off their purchase there.

Boutique Week visitors will learn there are "a lot of interesting, unique, small, independently owned businesses in York," said Amanda Meyers, a marketing manager for Downtown Inc who is coordinating the event.

"Every year we host a restaurant week, and it goes well. This new event will be a chance for us to shine a spotlight on our boutiques," she said.

Details are still being finalized, she said, but the event is largely anchored around First Friday in September.

"It makes sense for Boutique Week to conclude with the First Friday sidewalk sale," she said.

Who's involved: So far, 12 shops are signed up to participate. In addition to Growing Up Green, shops on the list are Art & Framing Warehouse, Cherie Anne, Gerald Davidson Studio, Frog and Bee, Green Bean Roasting Co., I'Sha Boutique, Kimman's, KrysLyn's Bridal, Park Street Pantry, Sweet Melissa's Dream and The Watchmaker's Daughter.

Beth Bulik, co-owner of Park Street Pantry, said, unlike other participants, her store really isn't about what people wear.

Instead, with a range of products from chocolate to jars of honey, her shop is a retail food store.

"So we're focusing on table fashions," she said.

During Boutique Week, Lancaster-based Susquehanna Style will be on hand in Park Street Pantry to demonstrate tablescapes for the holidays, she said.

"The event can really bring people downtown and show them what York has to offer," she said.

And that's why Vicki Strong said she's excited to participate.

The co-owner of KrysLyn's Bridal Boutique, a mother-daughter store at 286 W. Market St., said Boutique Week is everything she loves.

"I love anything that goes on downtown. I love fashion, and I love this city," she said.
