A man hiking the Appalachian Trail suffered burns early Thursday morning when he left the trail to pick up supplies in Gettysburg, police said. A cash reward is being offered to the person who helps police arrest the attackers.

After a confrontation with a car full of people, the 46-year-old Tuscaloosa, Ala., resident had some sort of liquid thrown on him, then was deliberately set on fire about 1 a.m., according to Gettysburg Police.

He suffered second- and third-degree burns to his face, scalp, arms and hands and was treated and released from Gettysburg Hospital, police said. The man's name has not been released.

He man was walking along Baltimore Street when a small blue car passed him. The people inside yelled something to him about him being homeless, and he yelled back, police said.

The hiker left Baltimore Street to avoid a confrontation when he saw the car turn around, but it caught up with him near the corner of Court and Levan alleys, police said.

One of the car's occupants got out, threw a cup of liquid on the man and tossed a lit match at him, igniting the hiker, police said.

In addition to his injuries, the man's clothing, backpack and its contents were damaged as well, police said.

Police said there were five people in the small blue car: Two black males, two white females and a white male.
