It's just some footer and foundation right now, but soon the construction along Industrial Highway in Springettsbury Township will be office space for two government agencies.
The IRS and Social Security Administration will relocate their York County operations to 2680 Industrial Highway once construction is finished in December, according to Skip Star, one of the owners of Suffolk, Va.-based Direct Invest York LLC.
Direct Invest York owns the Springettsbury Township property and is leasing it to the U.S. General Services Administration, which oversees the leases for the IRS and Social Security Administration, according to Gina Gilliam, spokeswoman for the GSA.
Leases will expire within the next 18 months for the Social Security office at 950 Borom Road in York City and the IRS office at 2801 Eastern Blvd. in Springettsbury Township, she said.
New space: The Social Security Administration, IRS and GSA worked together to establish a competitive bid on a new lease to house both agencies, and the new Springettsbury Township site met the needs of the tenants, she said.
Construction plans call for a 22,233-square-foot office building expected to house about 70 employees,
according to Jim Baugh, director of community development for Springettsbury Township.
The new space will support a variety of services for the Social Security Administration, enabling visitors to apply for benefits, request a new or replacement Social Security card, obtain information about programs and services, report a change of address and notify the office of any changes that must be reported, according to Terri Lewis, a spokeswoman for the Social Security Administration.
A number of those services can also be obtained online at www.socialsecurity.gov or by calling 800-772-1213, she said.
Likewise, IRS services are expected to face a seamless transition, according to Bill Cressman, an IRS spokesman.
The York County office is engaged in a variety of compliance activities, including tax audits and collection of delinquent taxes from individuals, businesses and other organizations, he said.
