A power transformer moving from Maryland to the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station could slow traffic next week.

The power transformer is the last in a shipment of seven transformers that have been part of parent company Exelon's $87 million plan to upgrade the Delta-based plant, according to spokeswoman Lacey Dean.

Recently shipped from Korea to Philadelphia and barged to Maryland, the 481,000-pound transformer will spend five days traveling from Havre de Grace, Md., to Delta.

Exelon is coordinating with state and local officials in both states to ensure safe passage of the transformer, which towers at 35 feet high and 28 feet wide.

Hake Rigging Company will begin hauling the transformer on Monday at 3 to 5 mph, and most of the trip will occur at night to avoid traffic congestion as much as possible until it arrives at Peach Bottom on Friday, Dean said. Detours and road closures will be clearly marked in advance, and a coordinated outreach plan was designated to notify residents and businesses along the route, she said.
