A York Area Regional Police officer rushed into a burning Red Lion building and woke two residents who were asleep inside early Friday morning.

Officer Donald Hoshauer, Jr. was on patrol in the area of North Main Street when he smelled and noticed smoke about 2:23 a.m., police said.

He searched the area and found thick, black smoke coming from a 22 N. Main St. apartment building and called for the fire department to respond, police said.

Hoshauer entered the building, determined the first floor was vacant and saw flames reaching the first floor ceiling, police said.

He then ran upstairs to the second floor apartment, kicked in the door, woke two sleeping residents and got them out of the building, police said.

York Area Regional officials said in a news release that the department is "very proud of Officer Hoshauer and would like to thank him for a job well done."

The fire is considered accidental and caused an estimated $40,000 in property damage, police said.
