A firefighter with 30 years of experience has been named second in command of the York City Fire Department.
As the new deputy chief, Greg Halpin will serve under acting Chief David Michaels, who took over for former Chief Steve Buffington in May. Halpins promotion will be official June 25, Michaels said.
Michaels position as "acting chief" is due to the city departments potential merger with a suburban department that could change the administrative structure, Mayor Kim Bracey has explained.
In the past, the department has had two deputy chiefs, Michaels said. But, for now, there are no plans to name a second deputy chief of the department, he said.
Capt. Gil Kimes will fill the assistant chief position vacated by Halpin, Michaels said.
