An 8-year-old boy was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center after an incident at the swimming pool in Codorus State Park near Hanover Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Chief William Hornberger, with the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said the child was found unresponsive in the pool and was brought to the side of the pool, where CPR was administered by a nurse who was at the scene.

After about five minutes the child was beginning to respond to CPR, Hornberger said.

Both Medic 46 from Hanover Hospital and the Station 52 ambulance responded to the incident, and a medical staff helicopter transported the boy from the pool area to Hershey Medical Center.

The child's condition has been stabilized but he remained in the children's intensive care unit at Penn State Hershey Medical Center today, Hornberger said on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, said Hornberger. The boy had been swimming in the five foot deep section of the pool, he said.

Family members had been with the child at the park, and he was being supervised by a teenager, Hornberger said.

Hornberger emphasized the importance of parental supervision of children when they are near any body of water.

"Obviously in the summer drownings are a major incident with children," said Hornberger. "When they cannot swim they need supervision, but even if they can swim you need to keep an eye on your child."

Hornberger advises parents keep a buoyant object near their children when they are in the water, whether it is a life vest or another floating device, as a preventive measure to keep them safe in the water.
