Christine Boll likes to organize and plan, even when it comes helping the community play.
Boll and about 1,000 other volunteers are getting ready to run the 21st annual St. Joseph Carnival at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2935 Kingston Road in Springettsbury Township.
The carnival runs 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
"We get thousands of people at the carnival," Boll said. "We're reaching out to the community, trying to make (the carnival) something that all families can to come to. We get a lot of Catholic and non-Catholic families."
There are no admission or parking fees. However, attendees must pay for food, rides and games, said Boll, a St. Joseph member and the carnival committee's co-chair and volunteer coordinator.
Ride-all-night bands are $20 each and are good for one night. Also, dinners will be sold for $9 Tuesday through Friday.
"We try to keep games at $1 and have everything reasonably priced for families, to keep it as (affordable) as possible," Boll said.
A good cause: Proceeds from the carnival are given to the church, which uses the money to support its ministries and for donations to charities and families in need, she said.
The carnival's volunteers are mainly St. Joseph members and local Catholic school students, who help run booths and with set-up and tear-down duties, Boll said.
Boll said she has been helping with carnival efforts for eight years and is glad the church has provided her with a fun way to use her organizational and planning skills.
"I met so many people and new friends I wouldn't have met had I never gotten involved," she said. "I just enjoy seeing all the kids, families and details come together for our carnival."
