A York City man accidentally shot himself Tuesday night while preparing to clean his new .40-caliber handgun, police said.

York City Police said the 31-year-old man was in the basement of his home in the 700 block of Oatman Street about 8:20 p.m. when he shot himself in the left hand.

The man told officers he'd just bought the gun. He said he was trying to take it apart to clean it when it went off in his hand, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Officers determined the incident was accidental and that the gun was legal, so no charges will be filed, police said.
