A York City teen escaped serious injury when he was shot Monday morning, police said.

The 17-year-old was shot in the hand about 6:30 a.m. in the 300 block of East Philadelphia Street, York City Police said.

Officers responded to the area for a report of gunfire, but by the time they arrived the victim was gone.

The teen went to York Hospital in a private vehicle for treatment of his hand injury, police said.

He told officers he was walking to school when someone approached him and put him in a headlock. The teen said he wrestled free and kept walking, but the person fired two shots at him, hitting him once in the hand, police reported.

Officers collected two shell casings from the scene, police said.

The victim's name was not released because he is a juvenile.
