Funding shortfalls are forcing York nonprofits and businesses to partner up and get creative, according to local leaders.

Beginning in June, La Casa de Tapas will give 10 percent of its sales to the YWCA, which is closed this week because of a budget deficit.

The closure has displaced 105 children in the YWCA's childcare program.

"We know they're struggling, and we want to help however we can," said Joyce Salazar, owner of the North George Street restaurant. "The general public doesn't understand how hard-hit the nonprofits have been."

La Casa de Tapas will also raise money for Family-Child Resources from July 24 through Aug. 4.

Desiree Irvin, vice president of marketing and development for Family-Child Resources, she said the center has cut back with office supplies and other items to continue serving children and families. "But we've depleted our donations," she said.

Salazar hopes other nonprofits partner with the restaurant, which will also benefit, she said.

County Commissioner Steve Chronister was instrumental in pairing her business with the nonprofits, she said.

"I want to see good businesses and good nonprofits succeed in the city. I like to help the underdog, and tough times have made us get creative," he said.
