A tractor-trailer carrying about 80,000 pounds of coal dust overturned in North Codorus Township Tuesday morning when the driver fell asleep at the wheel shortly after 5 a.m., according to police.

Todd Logan, 41, of York, was transporting the load for J. P. Donmoyer, traveling west on Green Valley Road, said Gregory Bean, chief at Southwestern Regional Police Department.

Logan told police he awoke near the intersection of Panther Hill Road and saw a turn in the road he was unable to negotiate. He tried a "hard left," and the tractor-trailer fell onto its passenger side and slid about 100 feet down the road, Bean said.

Logan, who was "basically dangling" from his seat belt, had to cut through the strap to free himself, the chief said. He was taken to York Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

No other vehicles were involved, and only a small amount of the coal dust spilled into the roadway, Bean said.

The road was intermittently closed until the scene was cleared around 8 a.m., Bean said.
