An alleged drunken driver fleeing from police early Thursday morning caused a two-vehicle crash and struck two pedestrians, injuring three people, one seriously, police said.

Michael E. Sharp, 46, of 117 Edward Road in York Township, is charged with numerous offenses, including four felonies.

"This guy is a repeat DUI offender ... and the perfect case of someone who shouldn't be out there driving, and who is an absolute danger to the public," Springettsbury Township Police Lt. Daniel Stump said. "His (criminal) driving history is extensive and includes DUIs, hit and runs, and a prior fleeing and eluding charge, going back many years."

About 2:15 a.m., a Springettsbury Township police officer spotted Sharp's black Ford F-250 SuperCab pickup truck speeding and weaving in the area of East Market Street and Northern Way, and driving about 60 mph, Stump said.

The officer tried to pull over the truck but Sharp took off, spurring a chase, police said.

Sharp fled west on Industrial Highway and south of Memory Lane, police said.

Chase stopped: After less than a mile, the situation had grown too dangerous to continue, according to Stump, with the truck going in the 50 mph range.

"Due to the level of (Sharp's) erratic driving, the officer decided to terminate the pursuit," he said.

Sharp drove south on Haines Road and, about a mile after the chase ended, ran a red light at the intersection of Mount Rose Avenue, where his truck was T-boned by a Chevrolet Silverado, Stump said.

The impact caused Sharp's truck to travel into the parking lot of Burger King, where it struck two pedestrians, the lieutenant said.

Captured: "Within a short time, an officer arrived at the scene, and (Sharp) got out of his truck and fled," Stump said. "Officers saw him fleeing on foot and were able to catch him and take him into custody."

One of the pedestrians, a 52-year-old man staying at a Springettsbury Township hotel, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to York Hospital. He is expected to survive, Stump said.

The other pedestrian, a 41-year-old woman staying at the same hotel, suffered minor injuries and also was taken to York Hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the Silverado that T-boned Sharp's truck suffered minor injuries but was not transported from the scene of the crash, Stump said.

Blood test: Sharp also suffered minor injuries and was checked out at York Hospital, where he was taken for a blood-alcohol test, Stump said.

The names of the pedestrians and the Silverado driver were not released.

Sharp is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, accidents involving death or serious bodily injury while not properly licensed, fleeing or attempting to elude police, hit and run, reckless endangerment, DUI, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

He is in York County Prison on $20,000 bail and a probation violation.

Stump said his department has turned over the crash investigation to state police, to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest. That's because a police pursuit had been under way prior to the crash, he said.
