A York Catholic High School graduate has been named its new principal.
Katie Seufert will start her new position on July 1. The school is located at 610 E. Springettsbury Ave. in York City.
She replaces George Andrews Jr., who earlier accepted a position as president of Mount St. Joseph's High School in Baltimore.
Seufert, a 1996 York Catholic graduate, currently teaches global students and American cultures at York Suburban High School.
"Serving the institutions that have helped shape me has always been my goal," she said in a statement. "My educational philosophy is guided by the core principles of love, faith and fairness and my work is always with one goal in mind and that is to provide the greatest opportunity for students to be successful. I believe that is what needs to be at the heart of all decisions in education."
Steve Carr, the York Catholic School Board president who led a search committee to find a new principal, said the committee was impressed with Seufert's faith, passion, intelligence, vision and leadership and interpersonal skills.
"We expect that Katie will be able to lead the school forward spiritually and academically so that York Catholic will continue to maintain its excellent reputation and strive to achieve even greater heights," Carr said in a statement.
The Rev. Edward Malesic, a board and search committee member, said the committee also was impressed with Seufert's commitment to Catholic education and deep love of the Catholic faith.
"As a Catholic school graduate herself, she already understands the importance of Catholic education," he said in a statement. "As a parent, she also understands the challenges parents of faith have of handing on Catholic teachings, morals and values to their children."
Seufert was the fourth generation in her family -- on both sides -- to attend Catholic school.
She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in social studies education from Elizabethtown College in Lancaster County and a master's degree in education in administration and supervision from Loyola College in Maryland.
Seufert has been a history and computer science teacher at John Carroll School in Bel Air, Md. At York Suburban she also taught geography and history, as well as women's studies, cultural diversity and comparative religion, according to information provided by York Catholic High School.
