Normally, customers walk past an automatic teller machine in the front lobby of Metro Bank in West Manchester Township en route to the main lobby.

On Thursday, they also walked by a 2004 Acura.

The car, driven by Tierra Lenker, 21, of Dover, crashed through the front glass doors and wall about 3:40 p.m., shattering the glass and damaging the ATM.

"Luckily no one was using the ATM," said Greg Liegey, manger of the 2100 York Crossing Drive branch.

No injuries were reported, and the bank remained open as police officers and firefighters cleaned up the mess.

A contractor was to be called in Thursday night to secure the gaping hole. The bank is expected to open on time Friday, Liegey said.

A glass partition separates the bank's inner lobby from the front lobby.

Brakes: The car jumped a curb and went over a sidewalk before crashing into the bank. The only damage the car sustained was a cracked windshield and a few scratches.

Lenker told police officers that she applied the brakes but they didn't work, said Sgt. Peter Hanes of West Manchester Township Police.

The car was towed to a garage to have its brakes inspected, he said.

Besides a lot of shattered bank glass doors and wall, the ATM was also damaged.

As customers approached the front of the bank, employees ushered them in through an undamaged door. A few of the customers, and employees, paused to snap pictures of the car.

Liegey was inside the bank at the time of the crash. He said he heard a noise before he knew what had happened.

"It almost sounded like an explosion," Liegey said.
