The York County West Nile Virus Program is starting countywide mosquito surveillance for the 2012 season.
During the 2011 season, more than 90,000 adult mosquitoes were trapped in York County. Residents, businesses and municipalities can greatly reduce mosquito concerns and health risks by cleaning up trash and yard clutter. Even items as small as a bottle cap can hold enough water to breed mosquitoes.
Mosquito traps will be placed throughout the county from April through October. Traps are labeled with contact information.
To report mosquito concerns, residents can call 840-2375. For more information about the trapping program, visit http://extension.psu.edu/york.
For information about West Nile virus symptoms in humans, contact the Department of Health at 1-877-PA-HEALTH or visit www.westnile.state.pa.us.
