The Eastern York school board voted 8-0 Thursday night to approve an intramural boys' and girls' lacrosse team beginning in the spring of 2011.

Superintendent Darla Pianowski told the board in August that for less than $1,200 the district could begin the program in the spring. Pianowski said providing the teams will allow the district to gauge interest in the program.

All equipment necessary to start up the program, as well as a $1,200 coaches' stipend, was donated by the Eastern York Lacrosse Club, she said.

"This program will not cost the district any money," Pianowski said.

If there is interest, the district anticipates entering YIAA play in the spring of 2013. Future start-up costs would be about $75,000 but that would be covered by an anonymous donation, according to Pianowski.

The program would cost about $15,000 to $20,000 each year to maintain, including officials, coaches and transportation, she said.
