U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Tuesday that a federal grand jury in Charleston indicted 37-year-old Tennis Maynard of Delbarton. Charges are possession of a firearm by an individual who had been committed to a mental institution and making a false statement in acquisition of a firearm.
Maynard is accused of shooting Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum while the lawman was sitting in his cruiser in April.
Federal law prohibits the sale of firearms and ammunition to certain individuals with a history of mental illness.
According to the 10-count indictment, Maynard is accused of making a false statement on federal gun permit applications on five separate occasions.
The charges carry a total punishment of 75 years upon conviction.
