The department's Office of Foreign Assets Control says in a statement Thursday that it has designated Griselda Lopez Perez under the U.S. Kingpin Act. A listing bars U.S. citizens from making business transactions with that person and allows authorities to freeze their assets in the United States.
The department says Lopez "plays a key role" in the Sinaloa drug cartel, which is led by Guzman, who is also known as "El Chapo."
Lopez is the second wife of Guzman that the U.S. government has designated under the act. In June, the department imposed sanctions on Maria Alejandrina Hernandez Salazar, who it also described a wife of Guzman.
