Weir American Hydro is taking steps to expand its footprint in Hellam Township.

The hydroelectric supplier intends to add 57,000 square feet to its manufacturing facility at 135 Stonewood Road, according to Betsy Logan, zoning officer for the township.

Expansion plans also include additional office space, a testing facility and supplementary parking slots, she said.

Those plans will be the subject of a Hellam Township Zoning Hearing Board meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at 44 Walnut Springs Road.

Board members will decide upon issuing two variances -- one for the parking spaces and one for the height of the expanded facility, which might reach 65 feet, she said.

It is unclear if the company will add jobs with the increased space. Calls to Helen Walker, Weir spokeswoman, were not returned.

The turbine maker employs about 130 people in the York area. For many years, it was known as American Hydro until it was bought by the British firm Weir for $38 million in November 2010.
