Early on, Monday didn't seem like it was going to be a special day on the golf course for Eastern York junior Andrew Davis.
Through six holes, Davis was right at par during the York County Junior Golf Association Tour's final regular-season event at Regents' Glen Country Club.
Then the Golden Knight golfer experienced something that made this day go from ho-hum to remarkable over just five holes. He had a string of four birdies capped off by an eagle. Davis was suddenly 6-under par after 11 holes, a position he never found himself in before.
Feeling a bit anxious about his good fortune, Davis had to decide whether to stay aggressive — an approach that was clearly working — or hang back a little to try to avoid miscues and protect his score. Davis went with the former and finished his round with two more birdies to close out a career-best 7-under-par 65 that earned him the Boys' 15-18 Blue Division title.
Fellow rival Gus Minkin of Central York High School would have easily claimed the title on any other day, but had to settle for a runner-up finish after shooting a 4-under 68. York Catholic's Joe Parrini and York Suburban's Devin Moore both shot 1-under 71s to tie for third.
""My previous best was 1-under. Today ... I just crushed it," Davis said.
That was an understatement.
With all the golfers teeing off at No. 10, Davis and company had to finish the round on the front nine. That didn't seem to bother Davis one bit. His most memorable hole of the day came on the par-4 No. 2. Listed at 403 yards, Davis banged his drive into the fairway and reached down to pick up his tee.
"I'm not real familiar with the course," Davis said. "It's pretty short, but it said it was a lot longer on the card. I didn't realize it was playing that short."
To nearly everyone's surprise, the drive skipped on the green to offer Davis a chance for an eagle putt.
"The putt, which was about 30-35 feet, I didn't know how much it was going to break, so I kind of thought that if I played it left-edge and hit it hard that would take the break out," he said. "And it just hit off the back and went in."
Davis stayed out of trouble pretty much all day, with the lone exception coming on the par-5 No. 7, a hole he bogeyed. Even after that, Davis was able quickly move on and finish his round with birdies on No. 8 and 9.
Such a finish took the wind out of the sails of Minkin, who is a fixture atop the tour standings. Shooting in the threesome behind Davis, all Minkin could do was hope for Davis to blow up.
"I was playing really well, but I heard that he was like 6-under through 12," Minkin said. "So I was like, 'whatever.' I didn't think I was going (to catch him)."
Lee claims girls' title: Julianne Lee shot a 7-over 79, which was good enough to stave off perhaps the best Girls' Division field this season. Lauren Parrini finished in second with an 81, while Kendel Abrams was one shot behind her. Spring Grove's Victoria Ross was fourth with an 83, while Morgan Wirtz took fifth with an 85.
Lee, who entered play atop the season-long girls' division rankings, was able to maintain that position after posting her first victory of the season.
"My putting and short putts, especially since I work on them a lot," Lee said when asked about the best part of her game Monday.
Ross, a two-time York-Adams League girls' champion from Spring Grove, didn't get off to a great start and was never able to challenge Lee.
"I was 9-over going onto the front nine," she said. "I ended up shooting 2-over on the front, so that really helped. But the back nine is like narrow with a lot of doglegs left and right. This nine (the front nine) is like wide open. It gives you a little bit of room for error."
Justin Gruver shot a 75 to capture the 15-18 Boys' White Division title, while Evan Greenplate claimed the 14-and-under title with a 71.
