It's been a theme of late at Kennard-Dale High School.

An athlete shines in a sport where the Rams aren't particularly known for being dominant and turns that program into something of a winner. Along the way, the athlete does well enough to earn a college scholarship at an NCAA Division I program.

Basketball player Sara Tarbert (University of Maryland Baltimore County) and wrestler Chance Marsteller (Oklahoma State) come to mind as the most recent examples. Soon to join them on the list will be boys' lacrosse standout Jesse Schonbrunner.

The Rams' senior attack will next attend Limestone College in South Carolina. No, it's not an NCAA Division I school. And most York Countians likely haven't heard of the liberal arts institution with a student population smaller than that of York College.

But to diehard lacrosse fans, they know that Limestone has one of the top men's lacrosse programs at the NCAA Division II level. Just this past May 25, Schonbrunner was in attendance at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore when Limestone won the NCAA Division II men's lacrosse national tournament championship game, capturing the third national title in program history.

"I never knew about Limestone at all," Schonbrunner said. " I went and did a tournament down there last year. When I finished up the tournament, the coach pulled me aside and wanted to give me a tour of the campus and I talked to him in his main office."

Player of the Year: Schonbrunner tallied 60 goals and 27 assists this past season for K-D. For his efforts, the York-Adams League boys' lacrosse coaches named him the 2014 Division II Offensive Player of the Year and Division II Most Outstanding Player of the Year.

"He did all of this with a limited supporting cast," K-D coach Tom Nelson said. "He carried basically the team on his shoulders at times to move the ball up and down the field. We relied on him heavily. He was targeted and he was still able to score 60 goals and they knew it was coming."

The league accolades were revealed recently and players were given awards at a banquet.

West York senior Trevor Smith (95 ground balls, two assists in 2014) earned Division II Defensive Player of the Year honors. Smith plans to play at NCAA D-III Susquehanna University next year.

Central York senior Max Haldeman (62 goals, 61 assists in 2014, 209 goals, 158 assists career) was named the Division I Offensive Player of the Year and Division I Most Outstanding Player of the Year. It's the second season in a row of getting Player of the Year honors for Haldeman, who will play at NCAA D-I UMBC next spring.

Dallastown junior Addison Quinones (87 ground balls, 41 take aways, two assists, one goal) was named the Division I Defensive Player of the Year.

Coaches of the Year: First-year Central York coach Tom Mayne earned Division I Coach of the Year honors after leading the Panthers to a 14-2 league record, finishing tied with Dallastown for the top spot in Division I, and making an appearance in the league tournament title game and District 3 Tournament, finishing with a 15-4 overall record.

Grant Zimmerman earned Division II Coach of the Year honors by guiding Susquehannock to an 11-4 league record and an appearance in the District 3 Tournament, ending the year with a 13-7 overall record.
