Delone Catholic outlasted Conwell-Egan 7-6 in nine innings on Monday afternoon to advance to the PIAA Class AA state quarterfinals.

The game was played at Arcadia University in Glenside.

The Squirettes fell behind 4-1 after five innings, thanks largely to some sloppy fielding, which allowed District 12-AA champion Conwell-Egan to score three unearned runs against Delone starter Cassie Rickrode. Delone finished with four errors.

Delone, the District 3-AA runner-up, scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh force extra innings.

In the sixth, Mikayla McCleaf and Lori Sheaffer had RBI singles. In the seventh, Deanna Laughman, who finished with three hits, singled and moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a ground out. She scored on Shelbee Holcomb's RBI hit.

Delone plated three runs in the top of the ninth, highlighted by Holcomb's two-run double. It gave Delone its first lead of the game. Holcomb finished with four RBIs. Conwell-Egan scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback.

Conwell-Egan nearly won the game in the bottom of the seventh when they had the winning run on third with one out, but Delone's Katie Laughman and Deanna Laughman turned a line drive into a nifty double play to end the threat.

Rickrode got the complete-game win, striking out three and walking none.

The Squirettes (18-4) have now advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time since 1999.

Delone will face District 4-AA champion Central Columbia in Thursday's quarterfinals. The site and time for that game have yet to be determined. Central Columbia downed District 2-AA champion Holy Cross in a first-round game on Monday, 5-4, in eight innings.
